Oh geez. I'd thought of the family as a sign of life on the personal level -- the vivandière says she hasn't had time for a family but she's over the moon about the prospect of kids joining the band, and I assumed a lot of the soldiers have kids or nieces and nephews or little siblings or whatever back home. I hadn't thought of it in terms of new life after the decimation of their numbers, but you're right -- this is a little cluster of humanity and life that's new and growing and saveable, and there's nothing martial about them.
