One of the weird things about this read for me is that I have very little idea of who's important yet -- okay, a little bit, in that there were names I kept catching when I did my skim for chapter titles, but I have no idea who's going to be a complex major character and who's going to stay pretty true to their initial impression, or die quickly and only show up as a memory for other characters, or what. And it's a Hugo novel, so I expect there'll be a large cast and some epic scope, and my genre trope-detecting sensors are nowhere near as usefully calibrated as they would be for a modern novel.
